On 3rd March, 1915, the 1st Royal Berkshire battalion of 6 Brigade, 2nd Division, moved into the front line near Givenchy where they remained until relieved on 7th March. At 3pm on 6th March, the day on which Joseph Fitzpatrick was killed, the battalion was ordered to make a demonstration to assist a French attack on Notre Dame de Lorette. They opened up with rifle fire and continued for an hour to which the enemy replied with their own rifle fire and shelling. |
